Acer Aspire One Backgrounds

Posted on | February 12, 2009 | No Comments

Here are a few Acer Aspire One backgrounds which I made to fit the neat 9.8″ screen on the AAO (1024×600).
.

Have a look my .conkyrc for the Acer Aspire One (settings) copypasta into ‘~/.conkyrc‘.   The three RSS feeds are Slashdot, BBC News and Reddit. Still needs a bit of work - alignment things mostly, but I don’t have the patience to do it right now.

If you have an AAO I would recommend you install Fedora 10 on it, closely following this guide.

One final tip is to set your font DPI to 75dpi, get those fonts nice and small (also turn on anti-aliasing, hinting and sub-pixel hinting for nice smoothness.) Do this (in XFCE) but bringing up the menu > settings > User Interface Preferences.

Investment advice: drink heavily

Posted on | September 22, 2008 | No Comments

Quote of the day: if you had purchased £1000 of Northern Rock shares one year ago it would now be worth £4.95, with HBOS, earlier this week your £1000 would have been worth£16.50, £1000 invested in XL Leisure would now be worth less than £5, but if you bought £1000 worth of Tennents Lager one year ago, drank it all, then took the empty cans to an aluminium re-cycling plant, you would get £214. So based on the above statistics the best current investment advice is to drink heavily!

Leinster 52 v 6 Edinburgh

Posted on | September 13, 2008 | No Comments

Well done to the Leinster team for last night’s impressive 52 - 6 victory over Edinburgh in the Magners League. The game was a beauty to watch (especially from a Leinster supporters perspective!)

Luke Fitzgerald (Pivot!) performance was incredible, scoring a hat-trick he was my man of the match. It’s also his 21st Birthday today so Happy Birthday Luke/Pivot!

UPDATE: 15-09-08
I broke my PB again today - 52.2Km/Hr!

Great news folks, I smashed my PB for top speed this morning on the way to work!

50.6Km/Hr! Or for you old fogies reading this - 30.5 Miles/Hr.

I recently upgraded my crank so I think that may have something to do with it - my previous PB was 48.7Km/Hr.

Also - yesterday after work, Trish - who drives a car, jokingly challenged me to a race from Work to Tesco Ballybrack, 3½ kilometers down the road. I accepted her challenge and the race was on!

I took the lead early on (in fairness there were roadworks and it was rush hour (going the other way though)) and managed to hold her off. I turned into Tesco about 10 seconds before she did and was waiting for her at the entrance. What took you so long Trish? :-P

But holy cow was I a wreck afterwards! Jelly legs, the shakes and so much lactose in my saliva that you could sell it as milk! But the satisfaction in beating a car was worth the pain!

Happy 23rd Birthday Clo!

500km and counting!

Posted on | September 8, 2008 | No Comments

I’ve cycled over 500km on my bike! Which according to Wikipedia is the width of Sweden at it’s widest, from east to west. At an average speed of 15.8Km/Hr, which is faster than a Squirrel - but not as fast as a Black Mamba Snake. My top speed is 48.7Km/Hr, about as fast as a Thomson’s gazelle! All this exercise is over 31 hours of constant cycling!

I’d like to thank my Mum for helping me buy my bike, Iceberg for supplying the aforementioned bike and Barry Special for the steady supply of quality second hand parts! Come on the 1K!

Some other fun statistics:
Times I’ve nearly been knocked off: 2
Pedestrians I’ve almost accidentally knocked over: 5
Pedestrians I’ve tried to knock over: 1
Maximum number of cans of beer carried: 24
